With The Winchesters returning fans to the world of Supernatural, the fanbase is once again alive and thriving. Though the show rarely features beloved characters like Dean and doesn't feature other fan favorites like Sam or Castiel, the Supernatural fandom refuses to let them go.

In a show of love for the series, fans have created content of their own for the series on the fanfiction website Archive Of Our Own (Ao3). There, they create stories of their own and even work on building relationships or "ships" between characters. Ao3 is actually a great place to see what the most popular Supernatural ships are.

10 Lisa Braeden And Dean Winchester

Building a family with Lisa and Ben was one of the best things to ever happen to Dean Winchester. He was finally given a regular life, and he had genuine connections in the wake of Sam's imprisonment. He really built something good for himself.

Dean is a beloved character with a horrifically tragic past. It's no wonder that fans love a relationship that saw him actually get to break away from his life as a hunter. Dean had the chance to be normal and, given how hunting ended for him, there was no better relationship than one that got him out of it.

9 Benny Lafitte And Dean Winchester

The very opposite of Dean's relationship with Lisa, Benny was a character who drew out the hunter in Dean. As a vampire who fought alongside the hunter in Purgatory, Benny had already seen the worst of Dean by the time they returned to Earth. Comradery in Purgatory made them brothers, but some of the fandom sees them as more romantic than familial.

After all, Benny accepted Dean completely, and Dean helped to bring out the best in Benny. The two had the most heartbreaking separation in Supernatural, and their chemistry was practically unmatched. Two warriors who found each other in a horrible situation, they proved their worth and respected each other fiercely.

8 Castiel And Meg Masters

There are few relationships more interesting than polar opposites in forbidden love. Like Romeo and Juliet before them, Castiel and Meg Masters were from different worlds. Castiel was a holy angel of the Lord; Meg was a demon who worked for Azazel.

Yet, while Meg and Castiel were originally enemies, they quickly came together and formed an alliance. Before long, it evolved into actual feelings. Even Dean was making comments about Castiel's infatuation with Meg, so it was no wonder the fanbase noticed as well.

7 Eileen Leahy And Sam Winchester

Like Sam and Dean, Eileen was a descendant of the Men of Letters, which certainly helped ingrain her into the world of the supernatural. Like the brothers, she was raised as a hunter, as her adoptive mother trained her in an undying quest for vengeance.

The similarity that Eileen had with the Winchesters made her a natural fit as an ally, but her close relationship with Sam made her a romantic interest. Beyond her chemistry with Sam, Eileen was a great Supernatural character who deserved more screen time.

6 Lucifer And Sam Winchester

Sam was born to play the host of the Lightbringer. They were both angry little brothers with brutal resentment toward an absent and arrogant father. Their older brothers were dutiful and stern, often deferring to their fathers rather than making decisions for themselves.

Lucifer and Sam had so much in common that fans quickly latched onto the parallels. As literal soulmates, there was little fans could do to deny a potential connection. It certainly helped that Lucifer was an interesting enough Supernatural character to deserve his own show, which made fans jump at the chance to write fanfiction about him.

5 Castiel And Sam Winchester

While not the most popular relationship for either of them, the bond between Sam and Castiel was still strong enough to draw the eyes of fanfiction writers everywhere. After all, there are some narrative themes that have kept fans coming back to the ship for years.

The man destined to become the vessel for Lucifer having a relationship with an angel is intriguing enough. And the fact that Sam managed to fight off Lucifer and Castiel managed to develop free will made them fascinating enough to inspire plenty of fanfiction.

4 Jessica Moore And Sam Winchester

The relationship that started it all, Jess was Sam's girlfriend in law school. Of course, that was before she was ritualistically murdered by the same demon who killed Sam's mother. It's hard for fans not to discuss a potential alternative path that might have left Jess alive and Sam happy.

Sam's time with Jess was the best of his life. He really had the chance to live a normal life without having to worry about hunts or John Winchester or angels and demons. It was a much-needed break for him, and fans have taken to it with love.

3 Gabriel And Sam Winchester

The spoiled little brothers who desperately want their family to stop fighting, Gabriel and Sam were a very interesting pair. One of the best side characters in Supernatural, Gabriel was a trickster who loved playing games on the Winchesters. It made for a fun show whenever Sam and Gabriel appeared on-screen together.

The ship gives the opportunity for both Winchester brothers to have angels of their own. It also allows for fans to write about Gabriel and give him a ship with such a contrasting character with a very different personality.

2 Dean Winchester And Sam Winchester

Dean and Sam spend the majority of Supernatural side by side. Having grown up together, each complements the other, and they serve to bolster each other's weaknesses and encourage their strengths. As the main characters, it's no wonder that they feature in so much fanfiction.

Understandably, the fanbase largely ships brothers Sam and Dean platonically. It only makes it more touching that they actually found each other in the afterlife and really managed to build a future for themselves along the way.

1 Castiel And Dean Winchester

The relationship between Dean and Castiel is one that fans most often think of when considering Supernatural. The angel and the man he raised from perdition have been focal points since early in the show's run, and they certainly left a mark with their unresolved tension.

Fans absolutely adored the bond that the two shared. With Castiel's canonical puppy love and Dean's gruff-but-caring demeanor, they were the perfect relationship for anyone interested in Supernatural. Castiel's slow descent into joining Team Free Will and Dean's ever-breaking desire not to get close to anyone made for an excellent slow-burn relationship.
