As if fans didn't need another excuse to play it, Capcom has completely remade Resident Evil 4 from the ground up, and there's a laundry list of special edition releases. The original release was one of the most influential survival horror games of all time, but some Redditors think that as great as it is, it also has one of the worst-designed levels ever.

Reddit users have brought up tons of levels from their favorite games that bring the fun experience to a grinding halt. Between big but lifeless environments, mind-numbing escort levels, and restricting hallway missions in otherwise sprawling games, these levels could have been completely cut out.

Celosia — Shadow Of The Colossus (2005)

Shadow of the Colossus is one of the most artistic and visually stunning video games ever made, not to mention the greatest story-driven PS2 game. It was even the one game that celebrated movie critic Roger Ebert played to try and understand if games could be as good as a format for storytelling as film (via Rogerebert.com).

However, despite how flawless many think it is, a deleted user refers to the 11th colossus, Celosia, as the one down point in the game. The Redditor comments, "My least favorite is that bull who's afraid of fire but hangs out in the only room in the entire Forbidden Lands with fire." It's the toughest part of the game simply because players have to pick up a fire torch before they're rammed by the colossus. But players had never been told how to pick anything up in the game up to that point, and it's a complete fool's errand.

Rush Hour — Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (2020)

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time was a return to form for the series, and it felt like it was developed by fans. It featured everything that fans of the original trilogy loved, and it even allowed players to control other characters such as Tawna and Dingodile, but that's exactly what's wrong with "Rush Hour."

CerN hates the level, mentioning that it isn't just the worst level in the sprawling 2020 video game, but that it's the "worst level of the entire quadrilogy." The problem is that the level takes hours if players want to find all the boxes, and in a game where players are rewarded for dying less than three times, that's almost an impossibility in "Rush Hour." It doesn't come close to being one of the best Crash Bandicoot 4 levels.

Downtown Minneapolis — Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 (2020)

As remaking old video games is a well-established trend at this point, it arguably wasn't done better than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2, which completely rebuilt the first two games in the series from the ground up. But it doesn't matter how great the developer is, Kajander thinks it was impossible to make "Downtown Minneapolis" as fun as the other levels.

The Redditor complains, "It's somehow so lifeless. And the cabs! F*** them. Though, I have to say that this remastered version of Downtown is of course way better than the original. But it was even more frustrating." While the user makes a good point that it feels lifeless, and it is one of the worst Pro Skater 1 maps, it's so satisfying reaching those hard-to-reach secret rooftops.

Yoga — Grand Theft Auto V (2013)

LazyLamont92 points at the sluggish and tiring Yoga levels in the otherwise groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto V, which is the gold standard of open-world gaming. While the Yoga missions are completely optional, they're still required if players want to reach that coveted 100% completion, and it's in one of the main story levels that's unskippable.

However, the Redditor puts a positive spin on it, positing, "I hate the yoga mission but what I love about it was that it was designed that way. It’s like the developers wanted to make you feel the pain and frustration that Michael felt doing that bulls***." That outlook makes the level more interesting, but it doesn't make it any less painful.

Chapters 4 & 5 — Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception (2011)

Following the almost perfect Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Naughty Dog delivered another exciting adventure game full of exotic locations and colorful characters. But Uncharted00 refers to the single worst part of the game, which is Chapters 4 and 5 ("Run to Ground" and "London Underground.)

However, it's one of the few missions where the whole gang is together, as Sully, Nate, Nadine, and Charlie Cutter are all working together, and their back-and-forth banter is endlessly entertaining. Unfortunately, that doesn't entirely make up for the lacking gameplay, which is mostly made up of running, gunning, and covering.

Carpathian Mountains — Hitman III (2021)

By now, the Hitman franchise is such a well-oiled machine, and it has gotten into a rhythm that's impossible to fault, as every level is a huge, sprawling map full of tons of different possibilities. And that's exactly why L-K-B-D thinks the Carpathian Mountains level in Hitman III sticks out like a sore thumb.

The Redditor explains, "It was so boring to play. A linear mission is never good to have in Hitman, the devs should have known that since Absolution." It doesn't feel like a Hitman mission, as it's completely linear and there's only really one direction the player can go in with very few outcomes. And as the series is best known for Agent 47's ridiculous disguises, the level is extremely lacking in the wardrobe department.

The Excavator — Batman: Arkham Knight (2015)

Batman: Arkham Knight is great value for money, as the game is so expansive, and driving through Arkham in the Batmobile is worth the price alone. Or at least it would be if the Batmobile didn't have such clunky handling, and it was one of the most criticized parts of the otherwise acclaimed game.

Fantast1c_Mr_Fox thinks the final Batmobile sequence where players have to evade the Excavator is the worst level in a great game. The Redditor comments, "I tried for about three hours one afternoon and I just couldn't beat him. I actually put the game down for a while because it wasn't fun to lose so often."

Controlling Ashley — Resident Evil 4 (2005)

WormsGarrett hates the chapter in Resident Evil 4 where players must control both Leon and Ashley. The Redditor comments, "Pretty cool the first time through but pretty boring after that, still not that bad though cause you can get through it in like 6 minutes."

While the user thinks Ashley brings down the iconic survival horror game, she is what makes the escort quests so much fun. And players control her once Leon has stormed the castle, and it's the most aesthetically pleasing act of the whole game. But there's still no denying that controlling her with what little abilities she has can be taxing.

Panty Raid — Bully (2006)

Bully is one of the seminal PlayStation 2 games, and fans have wanted the long-rumored Bully 2 for 15 years at this point. But not even nostalgia can hide the creepiness of one of the game's most embarrassing levels. Bogdi504 points to "Panty Raid," a mission that sees the player "stealing underage girls' panties for a middle-aged teacher."

It's Leisure Suit Larry levels of sleaze, and even though Jimmy is doing it against his will, as he has been ordered to do it by the gym teacher, there's something about it that feels inherently icky. Game developer Rockstar and the game, in general, are heavily satirical, but this level takes the game's concept way too far.

The Helicopter — Far Cry 3 (2012)

The greatest thing about Far Cry 3 is Vaas, the terrifyingly sinister villain who is almost as iconic as any movie villain. And the character elevates what is already a great game. However, two-thirds of the way through the game it's revealed that he isn't the main antagonist, and that is when it uncoincidentally goes downhill.

YogurtWenk thinks one of the final sequences after the player has defeated the real villain, Hoyt Volker, is the worst level. The Redditor notes, "Near the end of Far Cry 3 where you have to shoot stuff from the helicopter. I played classic on PS4, so maybe it's just broken on this version." The level has always been flawed, as it's a 10-minute stretch where players a limited to a machine gun in the back of the helicopter, and it's nothing more than a mindless point-and-shoot exercise.
