After Kit Harington revealed that Jon Snow is still struggling with the events of the main series (via Fox News), it it seems that there is still a lot to come for one of Game of Thronesbest characters. Of course, Jon Snow was the subject of some of the series’ most notable plot twists, so it makes sense that he would still be grappling with the consequences of those.

Indeed, the show as a whole was one which relied on plot twists to drive the narrative and keep viewers invested. While some of the events, such as the Red Wedding and the destruction of the Great Sept, remain topics of discussion, there are a number of important plot twists that, for one reason or another, that simply don’t get discussed as much by the fandom at large.

Sam Saving Ser Jorah

Sam is, arguably, one of the smartest characters in Game of Thrones so it's not surprising that he would do ended up saving Ser Jorah from the affliction known as greyscale.

In essence, he cuts away all of the afflicted skin and, though Jorah endures tremendous pain, he is ultimately saved from what would otherwise be a lifetime of suffering. It’s a plot twist that is, in the scheme of things, quite small, but it is nevertheless one that has a profound impact on Jorah’s life and Daenerys' (as she got her advisor back).

The Moment When Daenerys Reveals She Speaks High Valyrian

There’s no question that Daenerys is one of the best characters of Game of Thrones. From very early on the show, she showed that she was a quiet but calculating thinker, far more than others might have thought.

She showed this in a notable plot twist in which it was revealed that, unbeknownst to the enslavers with the Unsullied, she actually spoke High Valyrian after all. It was a genius move on her part and, while it has been rather drowned out by some of the more bombastic plot turns in subsequent seasons, it was one of the earliest indicators of her truly ruthless nature.

The Coup In Dorne

The storylines centered on Dorne were some of the most difficult in Game of Thrones. In large part, this is because the series, like the novels, didn’t really know what to do with them.

Since these storylines didn't really stand out as much as the others, it makes sense that few would talk about one of the most shocking events to occur there, i.e. the moment when Ellaria Sand and her daughters manage to lead a coup against Prince Doran and the members of his court. It’s bloody and brutal–as so often in Game of Thrones–but it’s a plot twist that doesn’t seem to have a larger purpose in the series.

Melisandre’s True Age

Melisandre is one of the most notable villains on Game of Thrones. From the moment she appears, she makes it clear that she has her own ambitions and her own devout worship, which she will do anything to fulfill.

Although she has her own plot twists, one of the most notable is the one in which she takes off her enchanted necklace, revealing just how old she is. Far from the young and beautiful form she represents, she is really a wrinkled crone. This plot twist was somewhat swallowed up by the events of the Long Night, but it presaged the moment when she finally walked into the sun and, taking off her necklace one last time, gave herself up for death. In the end, she became something of a tragic hero in her own right.

Bronn Was Poisoned By The Sand Snakes

Bronn was always one of the fan favorite characters on the show. While he was usually uncannily skilled at getting out of problems when they arose, this was nearly not the case when he was actually poisoned by the Sand Snakes in Dorne, during a bout with Tyene.

Fortunately, everyone’s favorite knave is saved, but only after he begs her for the antidote. It’s probably just as well that no one talks about this particular plot twist as, like so much else having to do with Dorne, it doesn’t really seem to add much to the overall story.

Uncle Benjen Saving Jon

Uncle Benjen is, arguably, one of the most notable side characters in Game of Thrones, if only because he plays such a key role in saving those who are beyond the Wall. Of particular note is the moment when he saves none other than Jon Snow, who has been attacked and nearly overwhelmed by a group of Wights.

It is, for better or worse, one of the most notable moments of plot armor in Game of Thrones, and a particularly striking example of a deus ex machina. That being the case, it’s easy to see why so many viewers would have forgotten about it since it seems a bit too convenient.

Beric Dondarrion Surviving His Duel With The Hound

Beric Dondarrion is another of the series’ most beloved secondary characters. His original demise at the hands of the Hound is, in its way, one of the most important deaths of Game of Thrones.

What really sets it apart, however, is the fact that it is not really permanent. Blessed with the gift of immortality, he soon returns from the dead, startling both the Hound and Arya. It’s a plot twist that would go on to have significant consequences for other characters–particularly Jon Snow, who was similarly resurrected–even if it is one that has somewhat fallen off the radar.

Varys Capturing The Sorcerer From His Past

Varys is arguably one of the most clever and cunning characters of Game of Thrones, able to play the long game when so many others are focused on the present. He shows this in many ways, but especially notable is the moment when he manages to capture the sorcerer who was responsible for turning him into a eunuch.

Unfortunately, though a fascinating plot twist, it’s one that doesn’t really go anywhere. It’s mostly used for Varys to offer an object lesson in scheming to Tyrion. It’s no wonder that it’s one that even diehard fans have largely forgotten about.

Lysa Being Responsible For Jon’s Death

Although it happens off-screen, the death of Jon Arryn is one of the most important demises in Game of Thrones. This is because it helps to set in motion all the other events in the series.

This being the case, it’s rather strange to realize how few people talk about this all came to pass: namely, that his wife Lysa poisoned him (under the influence of Littlefinger). In hindsight, it is really quite incredible that Lysa was able to exert such a tremendous influence over all of Westeros.
