Warning: This article contains spoilers for God of War Ragnarök.

God of War Ragnarök has had favorable responses from fans and critics and has also been the most successful God of War game at launch. As fans dive deeper into the Nine Realms and witness Kratos once again combating gods, many video gamers are debating whether it will be the game of the year.

While GoW (2018) and GoW Ragnarök have taken a step back from the number of gods that Kratos really faces off against in the games he still has his fair share of them to fight. Some don't always appear as they seem and others have already given some incredibly memorable fights like Thor and Odin.

7 Bjorn (Atreus)

The first boss fight that players will encounter in the game happens to be Kratos's own son, Atreus. Atreus doesn't know about his shapeshifting abilities early on in the game and transforms into a giant bear by mistake.

This boss fight offers a good beginning challenge for the game, but it's easily the least difficult out of all the gods that Kratos faces off against. Players may find themselves a bit rusty from the combat system, but they should come out as the victor with no problems.

6 Vanadis (Freya)

Similar to the battle with Atreus, Kratos doesn't realize exactly who he's fighting when it came to the Vanadis boss fight. This reintroduced the Valkyrie battles from GoW (2018), some of the hardest boss fights in the GoW games, and is one of a few similar boss battles Kratos can undergo.

The fight is certainly more challenging than Atreus and may even take the player more than one attempt if they're not careful. The boss fight is a good way to give fans an easier Valkyrie fight while also finally letting the players battle Freya at least once.

5 Thor The God Of Thunder (Second Fight)

GoW Ragnarök was one of the most anticipated games of 2022's end and one of the most hyped-up fights was Thor who is the only god that the players have the opportunity to fight twice. Surprisingly, the second boss fight happens to be much easier than the first. The fight actually seems to go relatively differently from the first boss fight and players shouldn't rely on their knowledge from the first boss fight to help them win this one.

Depending on the difficulty that the player has the game set at, Thor shouldn't take many attempts to defeat. The outcome is much different from how Kratos's battle usually ends up against gods, but unfortunately, fans didn't get to see their favorite god of thunder live for very long thanks to Odin.

4 Thor The God Of Thunder (First Fight)

The first boss fight against Thor happens to be the more difficult one and this may seem more difficult for players solely due to fighting Thor relatively early in the game. They have access to far fewer skills and are still getting the hang of the combat system.

Regardless, this boss fight is one of the best the game has to offer with its beautiful cinematic as Thor and Kratos fight, flying from area to area, with Thor's lightning bolt even freezing. What stuck with many fans was the incredible scene where Thor actually kills Kratos and jolts him back to life with his hammer, Mjölnir. Everything about this fight perfectly showed why Thor is one of the best-portrayed gods in GoW Ragnarök.

3 Heimdall The God Of Foresight

In truth, Heimdall was the greatest obstacle for the characters narratively. The creation of one of the best weapons in GoW Ragnarök, Draupnir, helped turn the tides of Kratos as he fought against the irritating god. The strategy to defeat Heimdall is far different from what players are used to with most bosses, but it helps supply an additional challenge and allows the players to get a better hold on Draupnir.

The boss fight ends of course in Heimdall's death and his end comes rather differently than normal. Kratos is shocked and disgusted that he actually brought himself to kill Heimdall, yet there is a part of him that's glad that he did it.

2 Odin The All-Father

The All-Father himself offers one of the most challenging boss fights in the game and consists of primarily two phases; one where they fight him before the Great Lodge and the second where they fight him beneath it. This fight feels somewhat underwhelming in the first half due to the lack of impressive visuals and having the same battle zone as the second Thor fight.

However, the second half of the boss fight more than makes up for it as the scenery changes and Atreus has an incredible scene of breaking and giving up the mask that Odin had long sought. The final half of the boss fight truly pushes the player to test their skills and utilize all three of Kratos's weapons.

1 Gná The Valkyrie Queen

There is no doubt that the hardest god that players will fight is Gná, the Valkyrie Queen. This fight is going to take every ounce of skill both the player and Kratos possess. It seems unlikely that any player could truly defeat Gná on their first attempt and will likely take a long time to actually master the boss fight and defeat her.

Some players have come up with some creative and extraordinary ways to overcome this boss but even still, she's far from easy to defeat. The fight ends with a saddening dialogue shared between Freya and Gná where Freya begs her to let go of her hatred. Gná accepts her defeat only and asks Freya to kill her to which Freya obliges.
