Ellen Pompeo’s decision to focus on her new Hulu show might have left some fans disappointed, but it has resulted in a rather positive development in Grey’s Anatomy. In Season 19, the show has shifted its focus from Meredith to a new class of interns, whose members are all turning out to be intriguing characters. And with Derek’s nephew also part of the group, things are guaranteed to get more interesting.

If the writing remains consistently good, there is no doubt that this class will rival season 1’s MAGIC. Throughout the show’s run, there have been a couple of other great intern classes and while they have all had awesome characters, some groups have been better at their jobs than others.

10 Jo’s Interns (Season 14)

At the start of the season, several interns are placed under Jo’s care. These include Sam, Levi, Casey, Dahlia, Vikram and, Parker.

Jo’s team ranks lowest because, among all intern groups, it is the only one with two cases of dismissals. In a perfect example of incompetence, Vik not only gets fired twice but also causes the death of a patient. Dahlia also gets fired and before that, she proves unruly by making it clear she only values Meredith, yet good learners should always be willing to acquire knowledge from anyone. Elsewhere, Taryn also shows a lack of passion for Medicine by settling for life as a bartender at Emerald City Bar instead of returning to the hospital when the surgical residency program resumes. Nonetheless, the team still counts as one of the best because Levi and Casey are absolute professionals while the show brilliantly uses Sam to highlight the plight of immigrants.

9 Karev’s Interns (Season 4)

Karev is among several doctors that are assigned interns from season 4 to season 5. His team includes Sadie, Norma, Laura, James, and Pierce, who later gets reassigned to George.

From Laura laughing at a patient to James doing very little, there are several reasons why most patients wouldn’t want these learners anywhere near them. Among the group, Sadie is the symbol of ineptitude as she not only fakes her way through medical school but is also at the center of several instances of mischief at the hospital (notably interns performing surgery on themselves). To top it all, she even tries to get Meredith to quit with her. The only redeeming intern is Norman, who is the light of the group as he is not only one of the funny Grey’s Anatomy characters but is also an inspiration, proving that one can achieve their dreams no matter how old they are.

8 Cristina’s Interns (Season 4)

Cristina’s class has Lexie, Steve, Ryan, and Dani. After a while, Dani gets reassigned to the newly promoted George O’Malley.

The class members’ involvement in the Intern Cabal, and their subsequent suspension, put a big stain on them. But on a positive note, it shows they were eager to learn. Other than that, there are no other major faults. Generally, most of the interns in the class do well and eventually end up becoming permanent doctors.

7 Latest Class (Season 19)

The latest class of interns is already proving to be popular. It consists of Lucas, Simone, Benson, Jules, and Mika.

Since the interns have just been introduced and are yet to properly prove themselves in medical assignments, they still have a lot to prove. However, they are still one of the better intern teams because they are solid, well-fleshed-out characters. Mika, Jules, Simone, and Benson all hail from tough backgrounds and are eager to show what they are made of. As for Lucas, he is not only Derek’s nephew but seems set to be a 2.0 version of him. Additionally, fans have gotten to enjoy intriguing relationship storylines from Simone and Jules too.

6 Meredith’s Interns (Season 4)

Meredith gets Lucy, Megan, and another unidentified intern. George is also placed under her on his second try at passing the internship.

The class could have been considered one of the best since it has a fairly clean record. However, Lucy and Megan remain underdeveloped characters for most of their run on the show, hence ruining their chances of boosting the class’ ranking. As for George, he truly shines because he is eager not to fail again. He becomes “The Chief’s Intern” and pulls off incredible medical feats on the regular,

5 Izzie’s Interns (Seasons 4 & 5)

Izzie is also assigned a number of interns between season 4 and 5. These are Clair, Mitch, Leo, and Graciella.

As for Claire, Mitch, and Leo, they don’t make it far because of hospital layoffs. This can’t be pinned on incompetence since they are rarely seen doing anything wrong. For them, it’s simply a case of being unlucky. Graciela, on the other hand, is impressive. She is shown to have a strong moral compass during the Intern Cabal incident and also goes on to survive the layoffs. Sadly, she hasn’t been seen since one of the most tragic Grey’s Anatomy events: the hospital shooting.

4 Unknown Resident’s Interns (Season 12)

In season 12, new interns make their debut, though the resident in charge of them is never revealed. These are Hannah, Jason, Jessica, and James.

Most of these interns don’t get to have out-of-work storylines, but they are shown to be fairly skilled. Owen teaches them the four Ls (Language, Location, Body language, and Leave), making them have a great bedside manner. Among them, Hannah becomes the most accomplished, going on to work closely with Meredith. She is the only member of this class who is still a regular on the show, having appeared as recently as season 19.

3 Stephanie’s Interns (Season 11)

Stephanie Edwards gets four interns for the season. These are Isaac, Audrey, Mitchell, and the more popular Andrew DeLuca.

It’s largely because of DeLuca that this intern team is adored. He springs into action on his very first day, helping save the life of Joan Paulson, then remains consistent from then on. The rest aren’t dull either. Isaac establishes himself as quite the emergency evacuation expert by carrying patients down four flights of stairs during the hospital fire while Audrey demonstrates her willingness to learn by interrupting the intimidating Richard Webber during a speech.

2 Bailey’s Interns/MAGIC (Season 1)

At the start of the series, Meredith, Cristina, George, and Izzie are placed under Bailey’s tutelage. Alex also joins the team after getting reassigned from Jeremy's class.

A good number of the fan favorites are from this group - and that’s partly because they show plenty of promise right from the start. Meredith makes a difficult diagnosis on her first day, George and Alex manage to save a dying patient in an elevator whereas Izzie saves a ferry accident victim by drilling burr holes in his skull. The only flaw to this group is George, who not only fails his intern exam but also causes the death of a patient, resulting in him being given one of the most interesting Grey’s Anatomy nicknames, 007.

1 Unknown Resident’s Interns (Season 9)

Interestingly, for a group that has some best-ever interns, the resident responsible for tutoring them is never revealed. The interns are Jo, Shane, Leah, Stephanie, Mousy, Susan, Tina, Stacey, and Irene.

Though the personalities of characters like Shane and Stephanie make them unlikeable, there is no season 9 intern that’s poor at their job. Stephanie shines all through, going on to become one of the show’s most accomplished, Mousey has one of the best student-mentor relationships in Grey’s Anatomy with Derek, and Shane demonstrates extreme competitiveness. As for Jo, the starts slow but catches up, becoming a favorite among both patients and fans.
