The Real Housewives of New York has been in the media again after Bravo released the former RHONY Housewife who was going to be on the spin-off’s The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip’s fourth season, Alex McCord. McCord hasn’t been on since season 4, so fans are excited to see her again.
To Prepare for a new season, rewatching RHONY may surprise some fans. So much has changed among the core group, and some harsh realities pop up through the Housewives' actions, storylines, and cast.
Knowing Bethenny Frankel's fallout
Bethenny Frankel was an original Housewife. Fans saw her build her business from ground zero before becoming and a self-made millionaire and mega entrepreneur. Bethenny has been on and off the series over the years but her final time on the show left a bad taste in fans’ mouths.
Many Housewives felt that Bethenny felt too good for the group once she became a successful businesswoman. She had fallouts with most of the women, but the harshest reality was seeing her and Carole Radziwill end their friendship. These days, she has a rewatch podcast of The Real Housewives of New York but it doesn’t look like she’ll be on Bravo any time soon.
Being Reminded Of Luann’s Downfall
Another harsh reality was seeing Luann de Lesseps’ fall from grace. In season 8, Luann started dating a well-known businessman in New York, Tom D’Agostino. Ramona Singer and Sonja Morgan tried to steer Luann in a different direction because of his reputation but the two fell in love.
Luann acted differently when she was with Tom. She was argumentative, defensive, and was going out more. Eventually, the two got married, divorced, and Lu was arrested shortly after. It’s hard reliving her downfall but she has since been on a better path and has a new spin-off with Sonja, Welcome to Crappy Lake.
Knowing How Bad The Last Two Seasons Are
RHONY has been a staple on Bravo since 2008, but things changed for the franchise in season 12 when Bravo added a younger woman to the mix, Leah McSweeney.
Adding new blood to this group didn’t go the way Bravo had hoped. They tried again by adding Eboni K. Williams in season 13 but it was the show’s worst season yet. After two record-low seasons, Bravo took a break from RHONY and created a brand-new cast. The two worst seasons being the cast’s final can be a tough pill to swallow.
Realizing This Cast Will Never Be Again
One of the biggest pills to swallow is realizing that the core cast of RHONY (Sonja, Luann. Ramona, and even Dorinda Medley) won’t be returning to the show and will move to a possible spin-off call Legacies.
At BravoCon ‘22, Andy presented the new cast. Every Real Housewives fan wanted to know more about the new cast of RHONY but its release isn’t for quite some time. Until then, fans have to accept the end of an era.
Ramona’s Dated Behavior
As legendary as Ramona Singer is, she can also be problematic. Ramona has always had a sense of entitlement as a wealthy and successful woman in New York, but over time, that entitlement became abrasive.
Ramona has had some cringe-worthy moments on RHONY when it came to race, terminology, weight gain, and even how to greet the staff. In 2023, it was best to part ways with Ramona because her behavior was no longer tolerable.
The Countess Is No Longer A Countess
Luann has made some shocking decisions over the years, including divorcing her first husband, Count Alexandre de Lesseps. At the start, the two seemed like a powerful couple raising their two kids. Eventually, Luann wanted more.
However, divorcing Alexandre meant she would no longer officially be a countess. But since she made her entire persona and brand around being a countess, she couldn’t turn it off. Today, she still calls herself a countess but it’s a harsh reality to realize she’s not.
Dorinda’s Fall From Grace
Dorinda Medley joined the cast of RHONY in season 7. She was wealthy, accomplished, and had an amazing house in the Berkshires that soon became iconic on Real Housewives. As fun and quick as Dorinda was, her energy got darker as the series went on.
Around 2020, Dorinda and her longtime boyfriend John broke up. She then began seriously mourning her late husband now that she was alone. Being in such a sad, emotional state changed her, and fans supported Dorinda’s decision to take a break from The Real Housewives.
The Demise Of Ramona And Mario
As problematic as Ramona could be, no one wanted to see the heartbreak she went through with her husband of over 20 years, Mario Singer.
Even though they did a vow renewal not long before, the couple got divorced after Ramona found out Mario was cheating on her. It was heartbreaking seeing her mourn the loss of her best friend and husband on TV. Especially how the divorce impacted their daughter, Avery.
Alex McCord Never Returned
Alex McCord was a former real Housewife who lasted the first four seasons before moving on. While most Housewives at least come back as a friend, Alex never returned and moved from New York to Australia with her family.
This is a harsh reality considering she’s an OG Housewife and she’s had some hilariously memorable moments on RHONY, like their cast trip to Morocco, Scary Island, and scenes with her husband.
Aviva’s Leg Throw Was Pre Meditated
In season 6, Aviva Drescher was on the outs from the group. She wasn’t getting along with the women and was a part of most arguments. As an amputee with a prosthetic leg, Aviva slammed her leg on a table during an argument to make a point that the only fake thing about her was her leg (which became one of RHONY's best quotes).
The leg slam became an iconic Real Housewives moment. But in a shocking twist, Aviva admitted that it was premeditated. In an interview with Huff Post, Aviva said she pulled the stunt to "earn [her] keep." This is a harsh reality because thousands of fans thought the moment was raw and at the moment, not planned.
