Many gamers were excited to hear the announcement of Hades II at the Game Awards, which serves as a sequel to Hades. The first game was widely loved and many fans' favorite game of 2020. While there is no confirmed release date for the game, it should release sometime in 2023.

Hades II isn't a completely necessary game though that doesn't mean it won't be great. Many unnecessary sequels have surprised fans into being just as good, if not better than the first. However, many sequels end up ruining the previous games and make fans wish they had never been made.

God of War (2018)

God of War (2018) is by no means a bad sequel and in many ways, it's the best thing that ever happened to the franchise. However, it wasn't needed in the slightest. The God of War trilogy had been considered some of the best games of all time and with Kratos stabbing himself in the chest, no one expected him to return.

The conclusion was perfect for the character, and it didn't seem like there was any way forward from there. However, Santa Monica decided to give Kratos a new chance and a new life. He's become a redemptive character and is far more interesting and complex than he ever was. Yet, in some ways, the God of War trilogy might've been better left alone and just received remakes instead.

Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II will always be a controversial game among Souls fans. It's the one game that Hidetaka Miyazaki didn't write or direct and because of that, it deviates a lot from the typical Souls game.

The game feels extremely clunky and has absolutely no narrative connection to the first Dark Souls game. So while Dark Souls never needed a sequel anyway, Dark Souls II just felt like some cheap copy that couldn't live up to the original. While Dark Souls II was a completely unnecessary sequel, it did give way for a necessary sequel, Dark Souls III.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem / New Mystery of the Emblem

Fire Emblem has its fair share of sequels in the franchise and even has a prequel and an interquel. However, Mystery of the Emblem is the one game that never seems to stand out. The story feels final and complete in Shadow Dragon, one of the best Fire Emblem games, and Marth reigns as the savior and king of Altea.

Mystery of the Emblem is great for players who want to know more about the characters and to see what they do next, but most of the game falls flat in comparison to Mystery of the Emblem. The remake, New Mystery of the Emblem also felt completely unnecessary, especially with its poor sales and the fact that it was only released in Japan.

The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass

While Adventure of Link might be one of the most hated sequels in the Zelda franchise, it's far from unnecessary. The Phantom Hourglass on the other hand is a completely different story. The game is a direct sequel to the Wind Waker and is the first Zelda game released for the Nintendo DS.

Mixed with the positive reception of Wind Waker and the fact that the Nintendo DS was the best-selling Nintendo console, it's no surprise that the Phantom Hourglass is one of the best-selling Zelda games ever. However, the game barely manages to capture anything about what makes the Wind Waker so great. The story is boring, the world feels dry, the graphics aged terribly, and the new gameplay gimmicks just aren't fun.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation managed to go by relatively unnoticed. There was hardly any marketing done for the game and everyone who played it felt the game was dry and boring.

Assassin's Creed III is already one of the worst titles in the franchise, so to make a sequel to that game was easily the most unnecessary thing that Ubisoft ever did for the franchise. The game doesn't manage to do anything better than Assassin's Creed III and possesses an incredibly dry story.

Final Fantasy X-2

Final Fantasy X-2 has been one of the most favored sequels in the Final Fantasy franchise. Many fans point to this game when discussing Final Fantasy games and their sequels. The game, however, is completely unnecessary and undermines the conclusion of Final Fantasy X.

The player does have a choice to bring back a certain character or not, however, the canonical and obvious choice is to bring them back. A Final Fantasy X-3 game is confirmed and the conflict of the game is likely because of the decision chosen in Final Fantasy X-2.

Pokémon Black 2 and White 2

Unova seemed almost impossible to escape. While Pokémon Black and White were well-favored by fans, especially younger ones, Black 2 and White 2 just seemed redundant. It offers a new story and cast, however, a great deal of the game feels repetitive and the parts that are different are much worse than the original games.

While Black and White had one of the best stories in the Pokémon games, Black 2 and White 2 easily had one of the worst. The only Pokémon game sequel as unnecessary as these are Ultra SunandUltra Moon.

Force Unleashed II

Force Unleashed has long been considered one of the best Star Wars games ever made, and Galen Marek is undoubtedly one of the best Star Wars video game characters ever. The conclusion of the first game is tragic but extremely well-written.

However, the sequel is just incredibly weird, dumb, and unnecessary. The concept of clones was used well in some ways, but the game ultimately fell flat and the new Starkiller was dull and uninteresting. The only good aspects of the game were the fact that Starkiller could wield two lightsabers and the conclusion of the game if the player chooses the evil route.

Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures

Pac-Man 2 is one of the most random video game creations ever and is a video game sequel that completely changed genres. The original Pac-Man game is one of the most beloved arcade games of all time.

But Pac-Man 2 is a side-scrolling click-and-point game, which is a completely baffling combination. Not only is this just an odd shift for the game, but it's simply a bad game. Pac-Man is a game series that never really needed a sequel and Pac-Man 2 is about as unnecessary a sequel as they could have made.

Devil May Cry 2

Devil May Cry 2 has long been known as the worst game in the franchise and is without a doubt one of the worst sequels ever made. While the idea of a sequel wasn't completely unnecessary, this game itself was. The game manages to capture very little about the original game. The designs of the setting and characters are pretty good, but that's about it.

Dante, who is known to be hilarious and cocky has a dry and bland personality. The combat is also insanely easy and offers no real challenge. The worst part is the actual conclusion which leaves Dante trapped in Hell. Because of this, the game has always been considered chronologically last in the franchise, however, this was recently changed with the release of Devil May Cry 5, and it wouldn't be surprising if the game was one day declared as non-canon.
