Players who have already begun their playthroughs of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can attest to the greatness of the new Poison-types, whether it be their creative designs, stats, or learnable move sets. Though this type isn’t particularly the strongest of the Paldean region, that doesn’t mean they can’t be absurdly useful in battle.

With the Pokémon community gaining 9 valuable Dual-Poison types, like the adorable Clodsire and the revved-up Revavroom, competitive play is about to be that much more fun. This is especially true considering the Terastalization of the game, which can make these Dual-types be treated as though they were strictly Poison, giving them the edge over Pokémon they otherwise be weak against. Knowing this, which of the new Poison-types are considered the best?

9 Varoom

Though Varoom may be the weakest of all the new Poison-types, its final evolution surely makes up for it. Ironically, the possessed engine Pokémon has a pretty lackluster Speed of 47, and has a devastating x4 weakness to Ground-types.

Thankfully, learning Gyro Ball at level 17 is a valuable way of expanding upon its Speed stat with a STAB-boost. Varoom’s Steel/Poison typing makes it a great counter against the various Fairy-type Pokémon found in Scarlet and Violet, regardless of its less-than-impressive stats, only totaling to 300 BTS.

8 Paldean Wooper

While Paldean Wooper is great against other Posion-types, due to its dual typing of Posion and Ground, its main use is essentially extinguished by the time the player surpasses the start of the game, since the first two gyms are Bug and Grass.

It might not be one of the best Paldea Pokémon, but it is one of the cutest. It's especially funny to think that the muddy little salamander will turn into the tanky beast Clodsire by its next evolution, even though it’s quite feeble in its base form. Though, its 210 BTS and Water-type immunity that’s granted by Water Absorb definitely aren’t things to take for granted when first exploring Paldea.

7 Shroodle

As the very first Posion/Normal-type Pokémon ever, Shroodle has many things going for it, despite only being a base evolution. Being immune to Ghost-type attacks and having one of the fastest base Speeds of 75 at the beginning of the Scarlet and Violet, the Pokémon has a great offensive advantage.

Furthermore, it has access to useful competitive moves like Switcheroo and Pickpocket, which lets its trainer switch held items with their opponent or even steal one. Its BTS of 290 may not look like a lot on the surface, but Shroodle is certainly no pushover.

6 Glimmet

The Rock/Poison-type Glimmet is a dangerous beauty, formed in the shape of a flower in a vase while it’s actually a poisonous cave rock. With a base Special Attack of 105 and its stats totaling to 350, the Pokémon is formidable for being unevolved.

Able to shoot harmful spikes each time its foe makes contact with it, Glimmet’s Toxic Debris is wonderful for utilizing field hazards and leaves Pokémon with multi-strike moves like Fury Swipes reeling, as they lose HP with each individual hit. This ability helps make up for Glimmet’s mediocre HP stat, which would otherwise be much more of an issue.

5 Grafaiai

The evolution of Shroodle becomes one of the coolest-designed new Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet, Grafaiai. Its glowing green eyes and a lemur-like shape don’t attest to its power, However, which lies in its incredible Speed of 110.

Combined with its Unburden ability, which doubles the Pokémon's Speed stat, its held item is used or lost, the Poison/Normal-type can be a real menace. As if that wasn’t enough, Grafaiai's signature move Doodle lets it copy the ability of its opponent and fellow party Pokémon alike. Making for a powerful competitive Pokémon, especially with its base stats of 485, it plays a support role unlike any other Paldean pocket monster.

4 Glimmora

Wise trainers won’t let Glimmora’s beautiful coloring fool them, as it is one of the strongest Poison-type Pokémon in Paldea. The sentient sphere of a geode is full of venom and potential, its spikes having no mercy.

Its ample Special Attack stat of 130 and 525 BTS attest to this, only more powerful when using its signature move, Mortal Spin. This ability damages its target while removing any effects like constricting moves, then leaves its opponent poisoned. Other abilities, like Power Gem and Spiky Shield, further prove the Rock/Poison-type’s strength.

3 Revavroom

The evolution of Varoom really knows how to rev up its engine as the power source behind Team Star raids. Though like its pre-evolution, it is x4 weak to Ground-type moves, Revavroom’s own moves balance out this inconvenience.

For example, Magnet Rise lets the Pokémon become immune to Ground-type moves for 5 turns, letting it flex its power on its countering foe. Its Attack of 112 is utilized best alongside the Shift Gear skill, which increases the Steel/Poison-type’s Speed by two stages and its Attack by one stage. Clearly, Revavroom’s 500 base stats are nothing to joke about.

2 Clodsire

One of the most overpowered Poison-types in Scarlet and Violet, Clodsire is the panzer of Paldea, even though it looks like a huge and smiling clod of mud. Like Quagsire, the Pokémon puts its highest power into its defense.

The Poison/Ground-type’s Special Defense of 100, HP of 130, and base stats totaling to 430 only further prove its tanky nature. When this is added to moves like Toxic Spikes, which poisons each foe that enters the battle, and the Yawn move, which switches opponents out or puts them to sleep, things can quickly become dire for the enemy. Lastly, Using Terastalization can fix its weakness to Grass-type moves by transforming Clodsire into a mono Poison-type.

1 Iron Moth

The future variant of Volcarona, AKA Iron Moth, is a Fire/Poison-type that is the perfect counter to just about every Grass-type Pokémon in Paldea. With its Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed all in the 100s, there's no question that it’s the best new Poison-type.

Exclusive to Pokémon Violet, the mechanic Mothra gains a boost while in electric terrain thanks to its Quark Drive ability, but that isn’t all. Practically made for competitive play, Iron Moth utilizes its 140 Special Attack best with moves like Toxic Spikes, poisoning every opponent that enters the match. With a BTS of 570 and its unique Dual-type, it's certain to be a menace in competitive play.
