Pokémon Scarlet and Violet introduce a new region with everything that comes with it: new challenges, Gym Leaders, and a slew of brand new Pokémon. Each of the eighteen types is well represented in the new games, but the mighty and tough Steel type stands out above the others.

Arguably the most powerful type in the franchise, Steel already has some of the most memorable and toughest Pokémon in its iron ranks. However, Scarlet and Violet further increase its reputation by adding several worthy Pokémon, whose excellent stats and soon-to-be iconic designs make the type that much better.

9 Varoom

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a thing for cars. Several of its Pokémon, including the box-art Legendaries, have car-like qualities, and they even have an engine Pokémon, Varoom.

It might seem like the laziest design ever -- indeed, Varoom is a sentient engine. However, what it lacks in design creativity, it makes up for in strength. Varoom is strong for a first-stage evolution, with a 300 Stat Total that heavily favors Physical Attack. Its convenient Steel/Poison-type combination grants it a whopping nine resistances and one immunity, and while it is four times weak to Ground, the good far outweighs the bad.

8 Tinkatink

There's arguably no better type combination in the franchise than Fairy and Steel. As the two most overpowered types, Fairy and Steel have numerous resistances and very few weaknesses. Such a typing would usually be reserved for a powerful Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon, but Scarlet and Violet make the bold and unexpected choice of assigning it to the pink humanoid, Tinaktink.

Tinkatink's design is perhaps lazy, but its in-game behavior makes up for it. Tinkatink's dual Fairy/Steel-type makes it a massive help throughout the story, and its impressive movepool will make fans love it even more. It has weak stats, but no one expects different from a first-stage Pokémon.

7 Tinkatuff

Tinkatink's evolution, Tinaktuff, is a natural progression of every element already there. It increases the humanoid aspects of the already busy design -- a hit-or-miss stylistic choice with most Pokémon fans. However, they work here because they played such a prominent part in Tinkatink's design. The hammer grows larger, suggesting a third evolution where the tool will be larger than the body.

The Tinkatink evolutionary line has some of the best designs in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and Tinkatuff proves it. Middle-stage evolutions are the hardest to pull off, but Tinkatuff comes out victorious by avoiding the awkward growing pains. Like its predecessor, it's also a Fairy/Steel-type, making it a wonderful choice in battle.

6 Orthworm

Titans are Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's equivalent of Legends: Arceus' Alphas. They are massive Pokémon, enlarged after consuming Herba Mystica that players must defeat to progress one of the game's three main storylines.

An Orthworm serves as the Lurking Steel Titan. The curious-looking worm is a pure Steel-type that lives in Paldea's deserts. It has a quasi-futuristic look, although certain elements of its design -- the goofy eyes, short, stubby arms, and color scheme -- make it look like something that would fit in Super Mario Bros. rather than Pokémon. Stat-wise, Orthworm has massive Physical Defense, but all its other stats are pitiful, making it a gimmicky Pokémon that'll be tricky to use in battle.

5 Revavroom

Revaroom is Varoom's evolution. Like its predecessor, it's a floating car engine doubling as a Steel/Poison-type Pokémon. Revavroom is a favorite of Team Star, and players will face it numerous times throughout Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Under Team Star's control, Revavroom has several forms, depending on who they serve. These alternate forms result in a different typing and are currently unavailable to players; however, its original Steel/PPoison type is far more interesting. Revavroom has a Stat Total of 500 with an extra focus on Physical Attack, making it one of the best Poison-type Pokémon in the series.

4 Gholdengo

One of the franchise's many gimmicky Pokémon, Gholdengo has a unique evolution method. Players may get it by evolving Ghimigoul after 100 Ghimigoul coins have been collected. These coins are spread throughout Paldea, but they're worth the effort.

Gholdengo has a massive Stat Total of 550, making it almost as strong as some of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Legendaries. Its Special Attack is particularly noteworthy, which more than makes up for its miserable Physical counterpart. Gholdengo's design is bizarre, representing most of the things fans hate from humanoid Pokémon, but its stats should help players look beyond its flaws.

3 Iron Treads

The underrated Johto Pokémon Donphan received some much-deserved attention in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet via two Paradox forms. Iron Treads, Violet's exclusive Paradox form, is a dual Ground/Steel-type and a futuristic relative of classic Donphan.

Iron Treads' design is somewhat unimpressive, especially compared to its Scarlet counterpart, the mighty Great Tusk. However, its convenient type combination and powerful stats make it one of Gen IX's most impressive new arrivals. Iron Treads is a Physical beast with high Attack and Defense and an above-average Speed stat that will finish battles before they even begin.

2 Kingambit

Kingambit might be the coolest new Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet. A thinly-veiled reference to a feudal samurai, Kingambit's design is instantly memorable and striking, taking all the elements that already worked in its pre-evolution and dialing them up to eleven.

Its dual Dark/Steel-type results in a quad weakness to Fighting, which is problematic; however, it also grants immunity to nine types and immunity to two, which evens the playfield. Kingambit also has excellent stats focusing on HP and Physical Attack and Defense. It might have one of the worst Speed stats in Gen IX, but its impressive HP will help it endure nearly every blow.

1 Tinkaton

Arguably the most overpowered Pokémon in Gen IX, Tinkaton is a near-perfect creature. Fairy and Steel make up for each other's weaknesses, making Tinkaton weak to only two types, immune to two others, and resistant to a whopping nine.

Tinkaton's signature move, Gigaton Hammer, is a devastating Steel-type attack with 160 power and 100% accuracy. Tinkaton also has excellent and surprisingly-balanced stats, although Special Attack is its forte. Overall, few Gen IX Pokémon are as impressive or useful as Tinkaton, making it not only the best Steel type in Paldea but one of the region's best Pokémon, full-stop.
