Superman’s return in Black Adam means that audiences will get to see Lois Lane in the DCEU too soon. Whether Amy Adams will continue playing the character remains unconfirmed, but fans will still be happy with the confirmation that one of the greatest fictional love stories is set to continue.

Even though all the talk currently revolves around the big-screen Superman projects, Lois and Clark have had many incredible adventures on the small screen too, especially in Smallville. And on the show, actor Erica Durance nails a good number of the character’s mannerisms.

Lois Lane’s Humor

Most of Lois Lane’s best Smallville quotes are sarcastic, witty, and shady remarks. The character handles her conversation with the creativity required, just as is the case in comics such as Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane # 80, where she breaks the fourth wall and orders Superman to get out of her magazine after an argument.

Superman is no Batman hence tales about him on the pages and on the big screen tend to have a couple of funny moments. At the same time, Superman isn’t generally a funny character, but his wooden nature is always something Lois Lane is more than happy to cover up. Durance, in particular, goes the extreme Emmy-bait route when it comes to delivering lines of dialogue meant for Superman’s love interest, but it’s these same extremes that have made the actor be labeled “the best Lois Lane” by some.

Lois Lane’s Bravery

From fighting Jonathan Kent’s attacker to confronting Maxima, Smallville is packed with acts of courage by Lois. In the comics, she has plenty of courageous feats too, with the most notable one being rescuing Superman from Sajiv in Superman Secret Files and Origins #1.

In the CW series, Durance barely botches the fight choreography. And she not only nails Lois' bravery but also does even better than the comic counterpart of her character because TV Lois starts doing courageous acts long before he meets Clark. In the comics, Lois' bravery is more of an acquired trait because it only becomes profound once she starts hanging around Clark and witnessing his heroic actions.

Lois Lane As A Hopeless Romantic

Durance’s Lois Lane proves time and time again that staying single isn’t an option for her. She does her part in making her relationship with Clark last and whenever he isn’t available for courtship, she will be happy to pair up with someone else. That’s why she also dates Oliver Queen and Arthur Curry. In the comics, her romantic adventures take her as far as the arms of Bruce Wayne, and one of Superman’s greatest enemies, Lex Luthor.

Romance has always been a great part of Lois Lane’s storylines because she is the love interest of one of the most popular fictional figures of all time. Though Durance’s version of Lois isn’t as daring as the illustrated one when it comes to picking who to date, her relationships make more sense. Logically, Lois Lane would refrain from dating people such as Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor because they are very connected to Clark. By doing so, she’ll only be hurting him.

Lois Lane’s Loyalty

No matter what’s at stake, Lois Lane will never reveals Clark’s secret. That’s also the case on the DC pages, where none of the Superman identity exposés come from her.

Lois Lane’s loyalty means a lot because a number of superheroes have been betrayed by their loved ones before. Daredevil is a good example, since his lover, Karen Page, once exposes his identity just so she can be given drugs. That’s something Lois would never do. Durance’s character hence preserves this trait.

Lois Lane’s Industriousness

On the show, Lois Lane works extremely hard, earning herself a promotion from the basement to the eighth floor. Her resume is long too, as she gets to work for the Smallville Torch, Metropolis Inquisitor, and the Daily Planet. The artist-illustrated Lois is even more industrious, so much so that she wins a Pulitzer in Superman's Girl Friend #80.

In other media, Lois tends to get rushed to Super Reporter status without proper development hence fans only see her work as an accomplished journalist. On TV, fans get to see her working her way up properly. She gets several scoops and with each new one comes an opportunity for career progression.

Lois Lane’s Compassion

Lois is caring and compassionate, traits that are evident through her relationships with Clark as well as her interaction with her ordinary people. The same can be seen in issues such as Action Comics #766 and Superman (Vol 2) #165 where she refuses to publish certain stories about villains because innocent civilians would be put in the spotlight.

Superman would never be with someone who doesn’t care about others and Durance appears to understand this well. She thus makes sure that one of Lois Lane’s greatest traits shines more than her negative ones. Whether it's eyes that beam with a genuine concern or a smile that curves with appreciation, the actress makes sure Lois is never heartless.

Lois Lane’s Overbearing Nature

Lois likes it more when everyone, including Clark, does what she says. This is also the case in the comics where she even orders him to stop being Superman and threatens to break up with him if he doesn’t.

Lois’ overbearing nature always comes from a good place rather than malice. Through Durance’s Lois, fans get to understand this trait better because she offers detailed explanations of her point. Other than just telling Clark she’ll leave, she explains that she won’t be able to cope f he was ever harmed.

Lois Lane’s Supportive Nature

Several times on the show, Lois declares her commitment to helping Clark realize his destiny of becoming the Man of Steel. This is something she does many times in the comics too. In Superman #704, she even journeys with him across America to help him reconnect with the people.

Durance’s Lois is way more empowered than other versions of the reporter. Even so, the actress makes sure her character never outshines the Kryptonian. Instead, Lois maintains the gender equality aspect while still remaining a supportive partner to the person that has a much bigger responsibility of saving the world.

Lois Lane’s Cunning

Durance’s Lois has dressed up as a prison guard, stripper, nanny, and golden bunny girl just to get a story. There is an example of this in Superman: The Man of Steel #130 where she makes calls to citizens, disguising herself as Superman's Security Coordinator, to make them go to secure locations before a battle.

In another universe, Lois Lane could make a great spy. But the same love for disguise enables her to be a better reporter. Apart from simply looking great in the costumes, Durance properly channels the attributes of the professionals she imitates. One of Lois Lane’s iconic Smallville moments even involves her dancing on the pole while doing undercover work at a strip club.

Lois Lane’s Sociability

Lois Lane makes friends with several characters on the show, thanks to her ability to start and keep conversations easily. In Wonder Woman (Vol 2) #170, the character is even seen playing pool with Diana Prince, proving her friendship circle is even wider.

A social Lois is always essential for the storyline since it’s through her that Clark has met most non-villain characters. On the show, Lois socializes a lot, and never at one moment does Durance ever seem like she is bored with the proceedings.
