Supernatural is easily one of the longest-running fantasy shows ever, running for 15 seasons and over 300 episodes. And with the Winchester saga continuing with the prequel series The Winchesters, fans of the show will have a lot of new content to look out for.

In the series, the Winchester brothers have been faced with a lot of decisions in their hunts, forcing them to make tough calls. While several of these decisions have turned out to blow up in their faces, there are some made by Sam Winchester that have turned out to be the right call.

Killing Gordon

"Fresh Blood" (Season 3, Episode 7)

Gordon Walker was a fellow Hunter that went bad and was eventually turned into a vampire, forcing him to face death as he tried to eliminate Sam before he could end the world.

This, of course, led to Sam having to decapitate Gordon to kill him in his new vampiric state before he could kill Dean. An easy decision to make, sure, but also a good one. Gordon was a monster even before he became a vampire, having a simple black-and-white view of monsters. Putting him out of his misery was both an act of mercy and an act of necessity to make sure he can't come after the brothers anymore.

Killing Dean's Daughter

"The Slice Girls" (Season 7, Episode 13)

The Amazons have been long-forgotten characters in Supernatural, as they never appear again after their one sole appearance. It is in this appearance that Sam makes a tough call to save Dean.

At the end of the episode, Dean is confronted by Emma, his daughter from a one-night stand, who has come to kill him to complete her initiation into the Amazons. Dean is unable to kill his daughter, leaving a just-arriving Sam to do the deed for him. Sam did what he had to do to save Dean's life. Even though Emma was his daughter, she had to die before she killed Dean.

Taking Dean To The Faith Healer

"Faith" (Season 1, Episode 12)

The bond between Sam in Dean is one of the many things fans love about Supernatural, and the lengths that the pair will go to to save the other becomes clear in the season 1 episode "Faith."

After Dean is given a few weeks to live after a hunt gone wrong, Sam tracks down a supposed faith healer, who does indeed heal Dean. Not only did this decision save Dean's life, but it also alerted the boys to the case going on in the area seemingly involving the faith healer, thereby saving more lives in the process. While Dean regretted this act, as someone else died in his place for him to live, Sam still insisted that it was the right call - and the younger Winchester was correct.

Leading Hunters To Attack The British Men Of Letters

"Who We Are" (Season 12, Episode 22)

The British Men of Letters were undeniably a weak antagonist, but their threat helped Sam become the leader he was always meant to be.

After the British Men of Letters started murdering American Hunters, Sam rallies several Hunters to storm their compound to eliminate them all. This was a choice he had to make. The Men of Letters were out of control, seeking to wipe out all monsters regardless of if they were good or not as well as anyone that stood in their way. Sam and the others had to wipe them out to save themselves and preserve their way of doing things.

Killing Rowena

"The Rupture" (Season 15, Episode 3)

Rowena is easily one of the standout characters from the series, making her death at the hands of a reluctant Sam so much more difficult to watch.

However, this was a decision that had to be made, and only Sam could do it. The souls from Hell were still coming, and the barrier keeping them contained was weakening. Rowena's spell, a part of which needed her sacrifice, was the only thing that could stop the souls from coming out, which saves the world. In the end, the decision had even better ramifications, as Rowena then took over Hell and continued to serve as an ally of the Winchesters.

Reconciling With Dean Over Amy's Death

"The Mentalists" (Season 7, Episode 7)

Sam and Dean have had their spats over the years, but their biggest one was over Dean's killing of Sam's monster friend, Amy Pond, an act that forced Sam to leave Dean and hunt on his own.

However, the two crossed paths again not long later when they both investigated a ghost case in Lilly Dale, New York. After that case, Sam realized that not only do the two hunt much better together, but that Dean was right about Amy. This reconciliation was essential: the two need each other, especially since they were currently dealing with the threat of the Leviathans. This threat needed the brothers to work even closer than ever before to defeat.

Letting Rowena Restore Her Full Powers

"Various & Sundry Villains" (Season 13, Episode 12)

Rowena is easily one of Supernatural's best characters, even when she was a villain. But her insane powers were once restricted by a binding spell - a spell that Sam chooses to help her break.

Sam understood Rowena wanting more power, especially when it was to protect herself from Lucifer. He chose to give her a second chance, something that very few villains in the show get. Though they would come into conflict one more time, this act would begin Rowena's redemption arc, proving that Sam made the right call in letting Rowena restore her full power.

Not Completing The Trials Of God

"Sacrifice" (Season 8, Episode 23)

The Trials of God were the main focus of season 8 to close the gates of Hell - at the cost of the life of the one undertaking the Trials, which just so happens to be Sam.

However, Dean, upon discovering that Sam would die upon completing the third trial, can talk him into changing his mind and stopping the trials. While he still nearly died despite stopping the trials, this decision was once again the right call. With the Fall of the Angels happening just minutes later, both Winchesters needed to be alive and well to deal with the fallout of this event and take on Metatron.

Forcing Michael And Lucifer Into The Cage

"Swan Song" (Season 5, Episode 22)

Sam getting stuck in Lucifer's Cage is one of the worst things to happen to him, yet it was also one of the best decisions he ever made.

When he briefly regained control of his body after being possessed by Lucifer, Sam can open a gate to Lucifer's Cage and drag Michael and himself down into it, seemingly trapping them in there forever and stopping the Apocalypse. It was a tough call, but also the right one to make. Keeping himself on Earth would've been disastrous and cost billions of lives. By sacrificing himself, Sam prevented that from ever happening.

Returning To The Life Of A Hunter

"Pilot" (Season 1, Episode 1)

Sam didn't have to return to hunting. But when Dean came to get his help to track down their father, he is drawn back into the life. In the end, that was the best thing that could happen.

Despite all the pain and suffering that the brothers went through throughout the show, hunting is the only thing they have, along with each other. And Sam and Dean wouldn't have survived as long as they did without one another. Their previous attempts to hunt solo have often ended in disaster. The brothers need each other to be the best they can be, and the world would've been doomed many times over if it wasn't for the heroic efforts of Sam and Dean.
