Dungeons & Dragons has become a worldwide phenomenon, with millions of players actively playing the game. But while D&D is easily the most famous tabletop role-playing game out there, it's not the only option.

There are thousands of TTRPGs in existence. Many of them are original ideas from creators around the world, but many more come from pre-existing franchises like Marvel and DC. For role-players wanting to create campaigns and stories existing in their favorite franchises, there are several great options in a wide variety of genres to try out.

Marvel Super Heroes

Marvel has easily dominated pop culture recently with the MCU, and Marvel Super Heroes was one of the earliest RPGs for the franchise.

First released in 1984, the game allowed players to not only play as iconic characters from the Marvel Universe but also allowed them to create their own characters. While instructions were plagued with editing problems, the game was easy for people to understand and play. The game also features special game mechanics that could change the scope of the game quickly, such as Resources, Popularity, and Karma. A newer game based on Marvel is coming out soon, titled the Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game and will likely offer a more modernized take for fans of the IP.

DC Adventures

Taking place in the DC Universe, DC Adventures allowed players to play as various DC characters, from Superman to the Bat Family's most powerful members.

The game brought the DC Universe to life for players, including some of the most iconic locations in DC, such as Metropolis, Gotham City, and even the alien world of Oa. Unfortunately for game publisher Green Ronin Publishing, much of the in-universe details for the game would become obsolete due to the relaunch of DC with The New 52. Despite this, the game still remains a fun adventure for superhero fans.

Power Rangers Role-playing Game

Power Rangers hasn't received much love as of late, but fans of the franchise will be happy to take part in the Power Rangers Role Playing Game.

Released in 2022, this game allows players to create their own Power Ranger and take the fight to infamous villains such as Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd. With so many options and creative ways to create a Power Ranger worthy of saving the world, this game will be a smash hit for any fan of the franchise still waiting for another Power Rangers movie.

Star Wars Role-playing Game

This series of role-playing games take place in the Star Wars universe and features stand-alone titles like Edge of the Empire and Force and Destiny that take place in all corners of the franchise's timeline.

The series allows players to create characters and travel throughout the galaxy, potentially doing battle with everything from small-time smugglers to the most powerful villains in Star Wars. Whether it's fighting the Empire in fierce dogfights or hunting down wanted criminals as a bounty hunter, this series of games brings the full Star Wars experience out for fans of all ages.

The One Ring Role-playing Game

Many fantasy tropes were created by Lord of the Rings, and the franchise itself is one of the most beloved in both literature and film. With The One Ring Role-playing Game, fans can now embark on their own quests in the world of Middle-Earth.

Taking place between the events of The Hobbitand The Lord of the Rings, The One Ring Role-playing Game sets itself apart from other fantasy RPGs by fully embracing the hardships parties can encounter while questing through the wilderness. Travel through Middle-Earth is tough, especially with orcs and other monsters roaming about, and this game fully takes this into account.

Transformers Role-playing Game

The Transformers movies may be unpopular, but there's no denying that the franchise is still thriving, and now fans of role-playing games can add a Transformers game to their collection.

Released in 2022, the Transformers Role-playing Game lets players create their own Autobot character in order to take the fight to Megatron and the Decepticons, with famous Autobots like Optimus Prime also taking part in the game. Though the game is small, given that it was released quite recently, more content is sure to come, and the content already given upon release is enough to keep Transformers fans happy for a good long while.

Stargate SG-1 Role-playing Game

Stargate SG-1, despite having little content released for the franchise in recent years, is still widely popular, and back in the day, there was even an RPG released for the hit series.

The game allowed players to become members of Stargate Command and explore other worlds while battling the Goa'uld and other races threatening Earth. The original game was discontinued after the gaming license was removed, but a new version of the game was more recently released and is available to play now, letting players return to the world of Stargate once more.

Firefly Role-Playing Game

Though Firefly ended far too soon for many fans, the legend lived on in comics, novels, and this role-playing game.

Set six years after the Unification War, the game lets players play as one of several pre-generated characters - including the crew of the Serenity - or create one of their own. Unlike many role-playing games, this game utilizes the Cortex Plus dice system, letting players keep their two highest rolls for each category. But beware rolling a one, for that could have dire consequences and make things even worse for the group.

Supernatural Role Playing Game

Supernatural was easily one of the best shows to ever be released on the CW, lasting 15 seasons and over 300 episodes. It achieved such popularity in such a short time that it had a role-playing game released for it before its 5th season.

The game takes place in the world of the series and lets players become Hunters, a group of brave men and women that hunt down murderous monsters. Notably, it was the final game to use the Cortex System before it upgraded to the Cortex Plus system. While people unfamiliar with the series may find the game lacking, Supernatural fans will be largely satisfied with what the game has to offer.
