The cast of The Vampire Diaries had a sweet reunion at the I Was Feeling Epic convention recently, and fans were back to feeling TVD fever. The show set a milestone in the teenage supernatural television genre with its dramatic love triangle, but the sprawling TVD Universe had some plots and twists which added no value to the story.

The introduction of many side characters and certain tangential plotlines only distracted viewers from the important parts of the show. Many fans on Reddit don't understand what the point was for these twists to exist at all, and if they hadn't been a part of TVD, the show might have been a smoother watch.

10 Fake Sarah Salvatore

Most viewers were confounded by the extended introduction of Sarah Salvatore, which was prefixed by Monique, a student impersonating the real Sarah. Her facade was figured out by Stefan, and then she was killed by Enzo, but no one quite understood why Monique was ever introduced in the first place. As Cebolla_y_cilantro summarizes "She’s there, Enzo kills her, and then…?"

To be fair to the writers, the fans did have a point as "fake Sarah" added no dimension to Sarah, nor did she have any important information to give to the main characters. It's not surprising that she was a character who was forgotten about by the end of TVD.

9 Mass Killing Main Characters In Season 5

The Vampire Diaries loved to toe the line between life and death, which was most evident in the season 5 finale. As a character, Bonnie was ill-treated a fair bit, but killing every main character, including Stefan, Alaric, Elena, and Damon just for the sake of making them come back to life was nonsensical.

There was no actual reason for all of them to die, especially Elena, who just joined in for the ride to the Other Side and back. The mass killing was weird and felt like, in itsshannonm's words, "They were just like, well I guess we can kill everyone because they'll be back next episode anyway!"

8 Bonnie Becoming A Huntress

Rayna Cruz was a villain who annoyed most fans, so when her last life and traits passed on to Bonnie, it became even more frustrating. For one, the witch had been through enough trials and deserved a painless way out of her predicament. Secondly, she never had a sword to mark a vampire with, so it was unclear as to how she was chasing Caroline and the gang without marking them.

It added nothing to Bonnie's character or the story in general, other than the fact that she wanted to kill her friends and lover. Bonnie could never have it easy, and LovingWife82 thought it was all "Unbelievable, ridiculous & unnecessary!"

7 Tyler's Death

There is plenty about Tyler that has aged poorly, and his unceremonious death is one of them. He was a pretty important character who was killed off just to show how Damon had gone off the deep end, which was a fact that had already been established as he killed people with Sybil. It did not need further iteration, and certainly not by killing the only wolf in the group.

His death also garnered insufficient emotion from his friends, again making it a wasteful death. Happy_sloth1234 said "All it did was p**s people off who actually liked him."

6 Doppelgängers Ending Up Together

The doppelgänger storyline was retconned more than once on TVD, and Redditors thought that making two sets of twin line who were magically bound to fall in love was completely unneeded, as it didn't strengthen one ship or the other. It felt forced to include this, and it seemed like a contrived way to make Damon and Elena's love seem more legitimate.

Fans saw right through this manipulation, and felt that it cheapened Stefan and Elena's love. As Inner-Manner-6768 echoed, "it ruined Stelena for me."

5 Damon And Andie's Relationship

After Damon's ill-treatment of Caroline, he went through some form of redemption where he was becoming a better man. Then, he decided to date Andie Star, and repeat all the same mistakes with compulsion and consent that he had made earlier, which made this arc completely pointless.

Andie went through the same rigmarole that Caroline did, yet Damon was considered a reformed man. Nobody said anything, and the relationship and damage it left was forgotten too soon. StrictlyMisadventure concluded "The existence of Andie and Damon's "relationship" adds literally nothing to the story that couldn't be added in some other easy work-around."

4 Elena Compelling Away Her Memories

Although Elena experienced a lot of grief during her six season tenure people, many Redditors thought it was far too easy for her to compel away her relationship with Damon because she couldn't cope. No other character was given that privilege, even though they dealt with loss as much as her. As Novel_Volume_2830 questioned "There have been PLENTY of other people mourning loss throughout the show, but only Elena gets to compel her loss away?"

It also made no sense that Elena took this drastic step after losing Damon, somehow suggesting that his death was much worse than her parents, her brother, or her aunt's. While it may have been done to emphasize how Damon and Elena's love was able to overcome the greatest of odds in the end, it did seem a bit pointless.

3 The Delena Sire Bond

Many fans were against the sire bond between Damon and Elena, because they thought it only served to make the couple happen quickly after the Stelena break-up, and for them to get physical faster. This was completely out of character, and Elena should have had some time to be single and then get together with Damon.

The sire bond just made their union creepy as many fans didn't like the fact that Elena had no agency or that Damon was making the majority of her decisions. As BuffythePastaSlayer summarized, "I can't think of anything valuable it added to the plot."

2 Killing Lexi

The introduction of Lexi, who was a very significant character in Stefan's life, and then killing her off abruptly made absolutely no sense. She had a lot of potential, and an established backstory which looked like it was going to be explored further, till it was brutally aborted.

Killing off a lovable character for a trivial reason like Damon's was a loss, and Novel_Volume_2830 wished that "they would have kept her longer and used her character for more good."

1 Enzo's Whole Arc

Gorg234 declared "I think every storyline with Enzo was pointless..." They further explained that his backstory with Damon wasn't interesting enough, and his hatred for Stefan was all-consuming but nonsensical. For a while, it seemed like the writers did not know what to do with Enzo.

He had oscillated between Lily and several other women on the show, so fans found it insulting that Bonnie was paired with an indecisive man like him. Even his death had no reason behind it, which made Enzo's existence on the show completely pointless.
