Mindy Kaling's Mrs. Who in A Wrinkle in Time only speaks in borrowed words. Alongside Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who is one of the three inter-dimensional guardians who helps Meg (Storm Reid) and Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) as they search for their father. The other two Missuses tend to be talkative in their own way: Mrs. Whatsit, the youngest, is bubbly, inexperienced, and errs on the side of oversharing; while Mrs. Which, the oldest of the three, is a confident and calming leader.
But Mrs. Who isn't used to conversation - or even being in human form - and so she chooses to express herself through famous quotations. Who uses emphasis and tone to transform others' words into her thoughts. She always cites her sources, giving the last name and nationality of the person who she is quoting. While in the novel Mrs. Who only quotes literary sources, Kaling's version of Mrs. Who uses quotes from both literary and popular culture. However, she doesn't include the title of the book, song, or musical, leaving audiences with many questions

Screenwriter Jennifer Lee praised Kaling's performance, saying that the role is different from the actress's typical comedic roles. That being said, Kaling skillfully uses quotations to create some of the film's funniest and heartwarming moments. On the evil planet Camazotz, when the Missuses lose their power, Mrs. Who stops speaking in quotations; as a result, Kaling has the opportunity to use a full range of words. However, outside of that scene, Mrs. Who speaks almost exclusively in quotations.
